Cherry Blossom Viewing (Ohana-mi):  Late April ~ Early May, at Iwate Park, Takamatsu Pond, Iwayama Park, Yonai Josuijo (water purification plant)

Japanese people enjoy cherry blossom viewing in spring. In Morioka cherry blossoms come out around late April. Lots of lamps with paper shades at Iwate Park and around Takamatsu Pond are lit at night time.

Ishiwari Zakura (rock-splitting cherry tree) in front of the Morioka District Court blooms earliest in Morioka. The old tree, 23 meters in circumference, breaks through a huge granite rock and bears beautiful cherry blossoms. The tree is designated as a natural monument of Japan.
